Building Momentum: The Early Days of PYP and a Community Awakening

My name is John Hosman, and I was blessed to be one of the founding members of the Pensacola Young Professionals (“PYP”). In the early days of building PYP, there was no playbook, only a shared vision, supported by research into what other young professional groups across the country were accomplishing in their communities. As part of the original founding group of seven, we were driven by a simple but powerful belief: young professionals deserved a stronger voice in shaping the future of Pensacola. What began as a series of conversations with community leaders quickly evolved into something more intentional; an organization built to connect, engage, and empower.

Community leaders like Rick Outzen, Evon Emerson, Mort O’Sullivan, and Quint Studer played a meaningful role in encouraging us to take that step. Each reinforced the idea that young professionals shouldn’t wait their turn to get involved. Their message was clear: the community benefits when emerging leaders engage early, contribute ideas, and take ownership of its future. That encouragement gave us confidence and validated that establishing PYP mattered and that there was a real opportunity to make an impact.

That first year required equal parts optimism and persistence. We weren’t just organizing social events; we were defining purpose and determining how to drive meaningful change. Every decision mattered, from establishing a mission to recruiting and retaining members. Much of the work was grassroots. We relied on personal networks, one-on-one outreach, and word of mouth to build momentum. The response was strong, there was a clear hunger among young professionals to get involved and take their place at leadership tables across the community. A shared sense of ownership made the effort feel less like work and more like building something meaningful together.

A defining moment during that formative period came with the Pensacola Community Maritime Park referendum. At the time, it was one of the most important civic discussions in the community and presented a unique opportunity for PYP to step into a broader role. Rather than focusing solely on networking, we saw a chance to demonstrate that young professionals could, and should, be active participants in civic life.

Engaging young professionals around the referendum required a deliberate and thoughtful approach. Many were interested but had not traditionally been included in these conversations. We worked to change that by creating awareness, facilitating dialogue, and encouraging informed participation. The goal wasn’t to tell people what to think, but to give them the confidence and information needed to engage.

That effort shifted perceptions on multiple levels. Community leaders began to see young professionals as invested stakeholders in Pensacola’s future. At the same time, our members recognized their own influence and responsibility. The referendum became more than a single issue, it became a proving ground for what collective engagement could achieve. Looking back, the Community Maritime Park itself stands as a lasting outcome and a catalyst for the revitalization we now see in downtown Pensacola!

Serving as the first President of PYP was both an honor and a privilege. I had the opportunity to work alongside talented peers who have since become leaders across business, government, and the community. While I held the title, leadership was always a shared effort. Together, we set the tone for what PYP would represent and how it would operate.

One of our earliest priorities was building a strong and sustainable membership base. We focused on creating programming that was valuable and relevant events centered on professional development, meaningful networking, and community connection. We wanted to offer more than transactional experiences; we wanted members to feel they were part of something impactful.

At the same time, we positioned PYP as a bridge between young professionals and established leaders in Pensacola. These connections were critical, not only for credibility, but for long-term success. We were fortunate to have strong early supporters. Leaders like Quint, Mort, Evon, and Rick didn’t just encourage us, they modeled engaged leadership. Their willingness to invest time, share perspective, and champion emerging voices opened doors and accelerated our growth.

Partnerships also played a key role. By aligning with organizations that valued leadership development, we expanded our reach and deepened our impact. These collaborations reinforced the idea that investing in young professionals benefits not only individuals, but the entire community.

Looking back, what stands out most is the sense of possibility that defined those early years. We weren’t just launching an organization, we were helping to shift a mindset. We demonstrated that young professionals are not only the future of a community, but an essential part of its present.

The foundation built during that time continues to matter. The relationships, early successes, and even the challenges helped shape PYP into a sustainable and impactful organization. What began as a small, committed group with the encouragement of leaders who believed in early engagement has grown into a lasting force for connection, leadership, and civic involvement.

Those early days remind us that meaningful change often starts with a simple idea and a group of people willing to bring it to life. I’m incredibly grateful to have been part of that journey.
