Member of the Quarter Q1 2021: Karyn Scarbrough

Congratulations to Karyn Scarbrough, our Member of the Quarter for PYP’s first quarter! Each quarter, our Board of Directors reviews nominations for outstanding members of PYP and selects a member that goes above and beyond the call of duty within PYP and in our community. Last quarter, our Board of Directors selected Karyn Scarbrough!

Karyn is a Florida native but moved to the Pensacola area to go to school and has been here since. She now is a business owner and working to make our community better! We asked Karyn some questions to get to know her and her PYP experience.

Where are you originally from? If not Pensacola, what brought you here?

I’m originally from Panama City, Florida. I first moved here after high school to attend UWF (go Argos!), left for about 5 years, and made my way back in 2015.

Where do you currently work? Have you had other jobs in Pensacola?

I’m the owner and founder of Rising Minds Learning. I was also a middle school teacher in the district for about 5 years.

What are some of your favorite things about Pensacola?

I love that Pensacola is a small enough city for connection with our leaders to be easily accessible, but big enough that there’s always something to do. Also, the usual, great local restaurants and the beach.

How long have you been in PYP?

I’ve been a PYP member for a year (just renewed!)

Why did you decide to join PYP?

Honestly, Zack Suggs begged, but also it was one of those things that I knew would be a great fit for me to help get me plugged into the community.

What is your favorite thing about PYP?

I love that there are so many ways to get involved. I can volunteer, get professional development, and just socialize all within the same group. Making friends as an adult is hard, but PYP creates those opportunities for me. It’s definitely an organization that you get out of it what you put into it. I didn’t think that it could be as simple as showing up, but it has been so far.

What other organizations are you involved in?

Chamber of Commerce

What do you like to do in your free time?

You can find me reading, roller skating, and hanging out with friends, families, and doggos in my free time.

What do you feel YPs can do to be a catalyst for positive change in our community?

Keep asking questions and get involved. Even though the narrative has started to shift, it’s still so easy to say “I’m too young to have a say in that”, but it’s not. If we want Pensacola to continue to be a great place to live YPs have to stay in the know.

What are your dreams for Pensacola and PYP?

I see Pensacola continuing to draw more young people to the area to foster a thriving community that can fill everyone’s cup. PYP is a key player in making that happen.

Meet other awesome members like Karyn by joining PYP!

Congratulations Karyn Scarbrough! We are excited to have you as a member of PYP! We are so proud of all the things you have accomplished and can’t wait to see what else you do for children and families of Pensacola and for our community! Karyn is just one of our amazing members. If you’re looking to be inspired by other young professionals in the Pensacola area, consider joining us! We would love you meet you.
